Transform Your Backyard into a Mushroom Haven – All You Need is a Drill and a Hammer!

Have you ever wanted to harvest your own gourmet mushrooms right from your backyard? With just a drill, a hammer, and Shiitake mushroom plugs, you can easily start growing fresh, organic mushrooms on hardwood logs—no special skills required! While Shiitake mushrooms are highly sought after for their rich flavor and culinary uses, you’ll be able to cultivate this delicacy right at home.

Each pack includes 100 plugs, typically enough for two logs or one larger project, giving you everything you need to begin your mushroom-growing adventure.

How It Works:

Drill holes into a hardwood log or stump (about 4–6 inches apart in a grid pattern).
Tap the mushroom plugs into the holes with a hammer until they are flush with the surface.
Place the log in a shaded spot and follow the simple care instructions to watch your mushrooms thrive!
Caring for Your Mushroom Log: Choose a hardwood log with the bark intact to help retain moisture. Keep the log off the ground using bricks or blocks to prevent contact with soil, which can introduce competing fungi. Store the log in a shaded area with good airflow and occasional rainfall.

If it hasn’t rained for 10 days, you’ll need to maintain moisture. Soak the log for several hours, or mist the surface every 15–20 minutes over a few hours to mimic rainfall. Allow the surface to dry between waterings, as Shiitake mushrooms draw the moisture they need from inside the log. Keeping the exterior dry will help prevent mold and moss growth.

Typically, it takes 6–12 months for the mycelium to fully colonize the log and begin producing mushrooms, but with proper care, your log will keep producing Shiitake mushrooms for years!

Eco-Friendly and Low-Maintenance: Mushroom plugs are an eco-friendly and sustainable way to grow your own gourmet mushrooms. Once your log is set up, nature does most of the work. Just provide occasional moisture and shade, and watch your mushrooms grow naturally.

Need a Log? The next storm could supply all the logs you need! After storms, check curbsides for freshly cut wood ready to be cleared away—a free and sustainable resource for your mushroom-growing project.
